You abused your powers: Court tells Mashatile protectors

The Randburg Magistrate court has told the VIP police officers caught
on video assaulting civilians that they abused their powers and police
resources.

Delivering her decision on their application for bail, Magistrate
Hlengiwe Mkhabisi said common sense should have prevailed as the video
shows no threat posed by the unarmed civilians.

The eight are facing several charges, including pointing of a firearm
and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

They were part of a convoy protecting Deputy President Paul Mashatile
last month.

The incident was caught on camera along the N1 highway in Johannesburg.
