I caught up with a trading friend from the '90s. Damon Bramblett was the man with the Johnny Cash audience recordings and these- a treasure trove of Willie Nelson DAT soundboards. He was friends with someone close to Willie, possibly his soundman.. and he has a ton of these recordings. I got about 8? DATs full of them, but that was about it. Damon asked me to digitize some of my copies of the tapes for him, this is the first one.
It sounds pretty nice except for a burst of digi-noise at about the 41:00 mark... thanks to these cheap DATs.
Let me tell you a little about DATs back then- they were expensive. The audio ones cost about $9 each ($5-6 in bulk), but you could find DDS (digital data storage) tapes that would work as audio tapes for WAY cheaper($3). The absolute cheapest/crappiest tapes were DICs. It was common to try to play back a DIC and have problems- to this day, I call them f*cking DICs.
