This month on the CUNY Forum we explore Why Voting Matters.
This Forum is number 2 of a 3-part series on Politics, Civics, Voting and the upcoming Presidential Election.
In an age where the internet, especially via social media, have made international and national news feel local, voting has taken on an added dimension of being about much more than back-yard issues. The overwhelmingly Democratic metroplis known as New York City, where many elections are decided at the primary (if one is had at all), had turnouts around 15% citywide with less than 40% coming out for the general election in 2022. While the race for the White House has not forced much attention, we expect the issues it brings to the forefront by November will draw more interest at the polls.
Putting aside national issues, local elections impact our everyday lives in a multitude of ways and using our collective voice represents the clearest path to reaching better outcomes in policy and legislation for our neighborhoods in addition to the public at large--for now and the future.
Our panelists will discuss where voters, especially CUNY college students, stand on the issue of voting and how they view the electoral landscape. What are the mechanisms, new and old, that encourage voting? Likewise, what keeps them from the polls?
