Things went south for Waylon Jennings in “We are the world” when Stevie Wonder had an interesting suggestion. It was early in the morning by this time, and Stevie Wonder proposed adding lyrics in Swahili to the song. However, several performers were not in favor of the idea. Keep in mind they had already been there for hours recording. Ray Charles expressed his disapproval, stating, “It’s three o’clock in the mornin’ – I can’t even sing in English no more.”
Jennings became so annoyed that he left the session, saying, ““No good old boy sings in Swahili.” Consequently, the Swahili lyrics were not included in the final recording.
