The 1960’s icon entertainer, Tom Jone’s, the famous Welsh singer, graced the Beacon Theatre on September 18th, 2024, for a one-night only performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. With an incredible orchestra behind him, Tom Jones impressively belted out a unique array of songs that included only a few of his past hits which included “It’s Not Unusual” “Delilah” and “What’s New Pussycat”. The rest of his songs centered on music by the greats such as Prince, Willie Nelson, and Chuck Berry.
Some of the fans that I met at the show felt disappointed that Tom did not perform the songs that were his greatest hits such as “I Who Have Nothing” and his greatest love song, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again.” I kept hoping that he would still sing some of his old standards at the end of the the show but he had other songs in mine.
To be quite honest, I was never Tom’s biggest fan but I was impressed by his
performance and his singing chops over the past 50 years. He put on quite a show.
However, to my surprise, there were several standing ovations by men and women in their mid-40s so it does appear that Tom Jones has not only discovered a new genre of music but has found himself a much younger audiance. Good for him! It’s just not my cup of tea!
He can still belt them out though.
Impressive.
