In the late 1950’s,a tour bus broke down on a lonely country road in rural Iowa. The famous musician Buddy Holly decided no more tour busses, and chartered a plane to the artists’ next destination. On February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson (who had the flu and rode on the tiny plane after Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to him) were all killed when that plane crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa, along with the pilot.

Investigators blamed the crash on weather or pilot error. Although many assume that the plane that crashed was named “American Pie” from “The Day the Music Died” by Don McClean, who was a big fan of Buddy Holly’s and referenced that sad, wintry day in the lyrics, these rumors have not been confirmed.

“But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
Something touched me deep inside
The day the music died”

McLean has said that it was the “loss of innocence” he was referring to in the song, which is why he called it The Day the Music Died - some of the biggest musicians in the world at the time left a legacy to be remembered.
