The oil crisis of 1973 provoked fuel-efficient engines, alternative energy sources like solar and wind and the development of shale, smaller cars by both Detroit carmakers and the Japanese, and so much more. The gas lines created when the Arab oil-producing nations shut off oil delivery to America and much of Europe were huge and frightening. But as this clip shows, the crisis gave me the chance to see places in the world and to be with people but I could never have experienced under ordinary circumstances. I liked the oilmen and the way they treated me and I liked the excitement of finding oil and such on believably remote places in Sumatra, northern Alaska near the North Pole, on the Iran Iraq border, and in the north North Sea–all filmed in the winter. And it was a thrill to contact William Jennings with the song we have written and have him sing it for the film at no cost to us. His dad was a roustabout and he wanted to give back.
