Hold on to your wallets and purses around this man! This cutthroat highway man would sell his own granny for some coin.

The inspiration for the song 'Whisky in the Jar', Patrick Fleming was the son of a tenant farmer in Athlone, but unable to keep hold of a job, turned to banditry and robbery in various places; including Dublin.

His chief haunt was the bog of Allen, where he stalked his prey and increased his barbarous murdering techniques when his victims refused to hand over the loot!

Later on, he formed a gang and they all moved to Barnesmore gap, where it's reported that they robbed 125 men and women in just a few days.

In April 1650, Patrick's luck ran out when he was duped by the landlord of a freehouse where he and his men liked to drink. The landlord had soaked their guns to render them inoperable so that when the sheriff and his men arrived, Fleming and his 14 men were taken into custody and transported to the gaols in Dublin, where on Wednesday 24th April 1650, he was hanged in chains on the high road to Dublin as a stark warning to all ne'er doers about the consequences of Banditry and murder!!!
