In 1977, singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb released a song called "The Highwayman" on his album 'El Mirage'. By way of his work with Country legend Glen Campbell, Webb had built himself a strong reputation in the popular music sphere. Despite Webb's repute as a songwriter, Webb's rendition of the song would not reach fame. It still lingered in the sphere of Country music though. It was through Campbell how Webb's highly spiritual song would reach fame. In the form of a country ballad, it was an expansive exploration of the American idea.
Webb's song had grabbed upon the radical experimentation in Country music at the time. It was an attempt to synthesize two opposite elements dominating Country at the time. The old-style Cowboy music and the unreal forms of Progressive Country. By way of many musicians, the concept of the "Cosmic Cowboy" was born. Through Webb's pen, and the legendary voices of Country, the "Cosmic Cowboy" would truly go celestial.
How then does "The Highwayman" span both time and culture?
