THE ART OF QUARTET FEAT. BENJAMIN KOPPEL, ANTONIO SANCHEZ, KEVIN HAYS & JAMES GENUS

Welcome to our YouTube channel! In this video you’ll hear the most sought-after, versatile and first-class jazz musicians: Antonio Sanchez, Benjamin Koppel, Kevin Hays & James Genus. Four heavyweights of the jazz world join forces to redefine the quartet format. Enjoy now!
Born in Mexico City, 4-time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sánchez began playing the drums at age five and performed professionally in his early teens in Mexico’s rock, jazz and latin scenes. Since moving to New York City in 1999, Sánchez has become one of the most sought-after drummers on the international jazz scene.
Following 18 years and 9 albums as one of the most revered collaborators with guitarist/composer Pat Metheny, he also has recorded and performed with many other most prominent artists like Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden and Toots Thielmans. In 2014 Sánchez’s popularity soared when he scored Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) which ended up fetching 4 Academy awards (including best picture) and for which Sánchez won a Grammy award. Additional film/tv projects include EPIX network's Get Shorty and Hippopotamus among others.
He has been the covers of DownBeat, JazzTimes, JAZZIZ, Modern Drummer, Drum! and Musico Pro — among others. Sánchez’s new album SHIFT (Bad Hombre Vol. II) on Warner Music features Sánchez playing virtually every instrument on the album — in addition to being its producer. SHIFT features Trent Reznor, Dave Mathews, Kimbra, Ana Tijoux, Meshell Ndegeocello and more
Benjamin Koppel is a Danish saxophonist, composer and writer. The 18-year-old Koppel, who had already released his first album, went to New York to take lessons and is now regarded as one of the world's best saxophonists. He has worked as a bandleader and sideman with musicians such as Phil Woods, Larry Goldings, Bill Stewart, Paul Bley, Jack DeJohnette, Peter Erskine and many more and has received numerous awards, including the Django d'Or. His latest recording is an examination of one of the most spectacular rescue operations during the Nazi era, White Busses.

Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist/composer Kevin Hays is internationally recognized as one of the most original and compelling musicians of his generation. His many recordings have received critical acclaim from The New York Times, Downbeat Magazine and Jazz Times, as well as the “Coup de Coeur” award from the Académie Charles Cros (France). Kevin has appeared on numerous albums as a guest artist, recording with Chris Potter, Bill Stewart, Joshua Redman, Jeff Ballard, Nicholas Payton, and Al Foster, among many others. Notable collaborations include a piano duo project with Brad Mehldau and world tours with James Taylor, Sonny Rollins, John Scofield, Joe Henderson, and Roy Haynes. In addition to his celebrated work as pianist and composer, Kevin has become increasingly known as a gifted and expressive singer/songwriter. In 2015 he released the widely lauded recording New Day, on which he performed his own songs along with a riveting performance of the Jimmy Webb classic ‘Highwayman’. Hays co-wrote several compositions on Steve Gadd Band’s eponymous album which garnered the 2019 GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

James Genus is an American jazz bassist. He is equally at home on the electric and double bass and is one of the absolute elite in his field. Shortly after moving to New York in 1987, it wasn't long before he became an important part of the scene and worked with the greats of the scene: Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, Benny Golson, Lee Konitz, Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Bob James, Geoffrey Keezer, and more recently artists such as Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis, Ravi Coltrain and pop acts such as Daft Punk. He is currently also a member of the Saturday Night Live Band.
