The weather for Saturday called for rain and the wave report said four foot waves but, as Michigan weather does it changed. This time in our favor, we had one footers with a sunny sky instead so we decided we might as well go out fishing. It was a HOT and humid day so once we made it out to 150 ft of water, Melissa, John, and Shelly jumped into the kool-aid blue water for a quick dip before putting the lines in.
We were off to a bit of a slow start but after a missed fish on a purple war frog, James brought in a nice 18 lb king off of a diabolical highwayman.
A couple of black flies made an appearance as we waited for our next fish so the guys made a game of snapping the flies with microfiber towels. Leading, of course, to a few snaps on each other with the towels as well.
As dusk fell, we really got into the fish. We had a hit on the 300 copper that felt like a nice fish. Melissa put in the work to get the fish in the boat, but the fish had other ideas. It ended up surfacing and shaking the hook. Melissa made up for it with the next fish though by bringing in a nice three pounder off of the low diver with a purple war frog.
When it got dark we thought we would bring in the poles with paddle boards and make a nice troll into the channel with just the cannon balls out. After Matt took the board off of our 250 copper, he felt the fish hit the Mac Muffin Mag. Matt jerked to set the hook and reeled in for all that he was worth, determined to get it in, but alas the fish was no longer the line.
Upon bringing the lines in, we discovered that the fish snapped the leader at the copper.
The final hit of the evening was handed off to Derick, the hit was on a meat rig on the 300. This monster fish was fighting hard so John stepped in to help his partner. Eventually the fish did end up shaking the hook and popping off.
We ended the evening with two in the boat and six missed, left to be caught at a later date.
