Sir Francis Dashwood was an infamous character in 18th century England - most famously associated with the HellFire Club in Wycombe.
This ‘land lighthouse’ was commissioned by him in 1751 for travellers travelling across the very dangerous unharmed fed lands.
His wife lived in Nocton and fears the Fen lands.
In 1808 the lantern on top of the pillar blew out and it was replaced by a statue of George III for his golden jubilee but when the Second World War broke out it was deemed to high for the RAF bases near by, I talk about what happened to the statue and where it is now.
