The “27 Club”—they left no time to regret … and for their gifts we feel blessed; their little group has always been, and always will until the end. Music was their special friend, and seeing the top five members of the ill-fated group counted down by Lin Brehmer of 93XRT on this sixth episode of RaviniaTV, they really did dance on fire, as one member believed the music intended.

An informal group of artists who died at the portentous age of 27—perhaps as “cursed” as classical composers with nine symphonies to their names—Janis Joplin is their matriarch, and two months before she became one of its headline members, she was as vivacious as ever headlining a concert at Ravinia, on August 5, 1970. And that night, feelin’ good was easy while SHE sang the blues.

This special episode of RaviniaTV commemorates the 50th anniversary of Joplin’s sole appearance at the festival, and we’re joined by one of the few people as close to the concert as Janis herself, Terry Talbot—co-founder of Mason Proffit, the band that opened for her—for both an exclusive chat about that night and a listen to the music he’s making now.

We also share an extensive visit with Chicago’s own Cathy Richardson, the lead singer of Jefferson Starship, as she reflects on her many intersections with Joplin’s music throughout her music career, from touring with Big Brother & The Holding Company to starring in the off-Broadway show “Love, Janis.” Together with the Cathy Richardson Band, the singer also performs some of Joplin’s greatest hits.

Summer is ON RaviniaTV — tune in to this channel every Friday at 7:00 p.m. CDT for a new episode!
