This week on Open Studio Jared Bowen talks to the lead actors in the musical "Sing Street," now onstage at the Huntington Theatre Company/BCA Pavillion. Based on the 2016 independent film, the musical is set in Dublin, 1982. Times are tough and money is scarce and prospects for Irish kids look bleak. Sing Street is told from the point of view of Conno , a teenage boy who has just moved from his private school to a tough inner-city alternative. To survive, he decides to start his own band. In turn, the music gives him--and his friends--a feeling of hope. From there Jared Bowen heads over to National Geographic's Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience. This made its world premiere in Boston, marking the 100th anniversary of Howard Carter's 1922 discovery of King Tut’s tomb. While a lot of immersive experiences have recently churned through the region, this one is different because it comes from the archives of National Geographic, which creates a more traditional museum experience. then Jared Bowen gives us his arts and culture rundown of the latest events in and around town. We wrap up the show with a look at how Akron, Ohio is turning empty storefronts into pop-up museums; promoting local artists and brightening up the city along the way.
