At the date of the Dublin fighting in 1171, there were not it appears more than 2500 Normans in Ireland, that is, perhaps 250 knights,500 other horsemen and 1750 infantry including archers. With some of these guarding the Norman conquests of Wexford and Waterford, historians estimate that approximate 2000 Normans were posted in Dublin. These men faced an Irish army numbering from 30-60,000 troops, but could this be right? Could the Normans take them on? Dublin was a key port and worth the chance.
