Here is Nat King Cole singing a great big-band arrangement of: “I’m Shooting High”, with Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra. Recorded at the new Capitol Records Tower Hollywood October 4, 1956. Enjoy my DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] conversion of this great recording.

"I'm Shooting High" is a fairly short song, clocking in at only 1:34. It’s a tad short to have made it as a single. I can’t find any info to verify if it ever made it on a subsequent album in 1956 or 1957. It’s found on a few Capitol compilation CDs. It was recorded a few months before Capitol made the decision to transition to stereo, which may be another reason why it was never chosen as an album track.

Personnel on this recording:
Nat King Cole - Vocals
Nelson Riddle - Arranger, Conductor.
Harry Edison, Conrad Gozzo, Clyde Hurley, Vito Mangano, Shorty Sherock - Trumpet
Murray McEachern, Ray Sims - Trombone
George Roberts - Bass Trombone
Juan Tizol - Valve Trombone
Mahlon Clark, Willie Smith - Alto Sax
Babe Russin, Buck Skalak - Tenor Sax
Joe Koch - Baritone Sax
Bill Miller - Piano
John Collins - Guitar
Charlie Harris - Bass
Lee Young - Drums

Music written by Jimmy McHugh. Lyrics written by Ted Koehler.
From the 1936 US musical film "King of Burlesque".
The 1st recording was performed by Louis Armstrong and His Orchestra, Nov 21, 1935.

About my mix:
The vocal track was mixed perfectly on the mono mix. I removed the original plate-reverb, re-added just a hint of stereo reverb to give continuity to the stereo image and ran a light DeESSer on it. I panned the drums right with a slightly better EQ to bring them forward, raised them 10% and made them reverb into the left. I gave the orchestra a wide stereo effect with a whopping 40ms delay on the right. I centered the bass but cut it by 10%. [The bass was a bit overpowering in the mono mix].

Technical Information:
I used iZotope RX-8 to isolate the Vocals, Orchestra, Drums & Bass into 4 separate tracks. SpectraLayers PRO-7’s DeREVERB utility was used to remove the original plate reverb from Nat’s vocal. Adobe Audition was used for Dynamic Range restoration, Delay, EQ, Reverb, DeESS and final mixdown. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
