We took an Old Town Trolley Tour of Nashville, a very efficient hop-on, hop-off tour, and here's the part when we drove through Music Row in Nashville, Tennessee. November 11, 2024.
**Music Row in Nashville** is not just a district—it's a living testament to the city's status as "Music City." Located about a mile southwest of downtown, it centers on 16th and 17th Avenues South, known as Music Square East and West, and includes nearby streets. This area has been the heartbeat of the music industry since the 1950s, home to recording studios, publishing houses, record labels, and organizations like ASCAP and BMI that support artists' rights.
One of the most distinctive features of Music Row is its appearance: many businesses are located in charming, residential-style buildings that look like homes. Behind these welcoming facades, however, are the inner workings of the music industry, including high-tech recording studios and offices for music publishers and producers. This contrast between homey exteriors and the cutting-edge creativity happening inside underscores the district's character.
Music Row's story began with the opening of the **Quonset Hut** in the 1950s, Nashville's first recording studio, followed by **RCA Studio B** in 1957. These studios helped define the "Nashville Sound," blending country music with orchestral elements to appeal to broader audiences. Legendary hits by icons like Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and Dolly Parton were recorded here.
05:57 Known as the "Home of 1,000 Hits," RCA Studio B was opened in 1957 and played a vital role in shaping the Nashville Sound. Over 35,000 songs were recorded here, including hits like:
????Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You (1973)
????Elvis Presley’s Are You Lonesome Tonight? and It's Now or Never (recorded among over 200 songs by him at the studio)
????Jim Reeves’ He'll Have to Go
????The Everly Brothers' All I Have to Do Is Dream
????Even contemporary artists like Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, and Wynonna have recorded here, continuing its legacy. Notably, Elvis famously recorded a Christmas album in July, with holiday lights strung in the studio to set the mood—a quirky tradition that still delights visitors today. We pass at: 05:57
Music Row’s studios have recorded countless hits that defined their eras, including:
????Elvis Presley: Over 200 songs recorded at RCA Studio B
????Dolly Parton: Jolene and I Will Always Love You—the latter went on to achieve global fame through Whitney Houston's rendition.
????Patsy Cline: Crazy (recorded at the Quonset Hut), written by Willie Nelson.
????Roy Orbison: Only the Lonely and Crying.
????Johnny Cash: Ring of Fire (Quonset Hut) and later work on The Holy Land at Columbia Studio A
Music Row remains a vibrant part of the global music industry. Contemporary hits and Grammy-winning albums continue to emerge from its studios:
????Taylor Swift recorded parts of her early albums here, contributing to her rise as a global star.
????Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow, and Carrie Underwood are regular collaborators in its studios.
????Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, and other pop icons have utilized modern facilities like Ocean Way and The Tracking Room for their projects
Music Row is the behind-the-scenes engine of Nashville's music industry. While Nashville's Broadway offers live music and nightlife, Music Row focuses on the creation of music. Recording studios, licensing firms, and production companies line the streets, fostering collaboration between songwriters, producers, and artists. The district also hosts global organizations like ASCAP and BMI, ensuring artists are fairly compensated for their work. Over 200 music-related businesses operate here, making Music Row a global epicenter for the music industry.
Music Row is not only a testament to Nashville’s past but a living, breathing hub where the music of today—and tomorrow—is created. Its mix of historic charm and cutting-edge facilities makes it a true treasure of American music.
