Singing the Living Tradition #123 "Spirit of Life"
words and music by Carolyn McDade
pianist: Marina Machado

Spirit of Life, come unto me.
Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion.
Blow in the wind, rise in the sea;
move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.
Roots hold me close; wings set me free;
Spirit of Life, come to me, come to me.
.
"The Times They Are a-Changin'"
words and music by Bob Dylan
released as the title track of Dylan's1964 album of the same name.
Dylan wrote the song as a deliberate attempt to create an anthem of change for the time, influenced by Irish and Scottish ballads (such as "Come All Ye Bold Highway Men", and "Come All Ye Tender Hearted Maidens"). Ever since its release, the song has been influential to people's views on society, with critics noting the universal lyrics as contributing to the song's lasting message of change. The climactic line about the first later being last is a direct scriptural reference to The Gospel of St. Mark 10:31: "But many that are first shall be last, and the last first."
