The first black Martin ever produced was built at Johnny's request, but without C. F. Martin III's approval, because he did not want a black Martin to be built. Martin's President actually didn't find out that the guitar had been built until the moment he saw Johnny Cash play it on "Columbo." That D35 was Johnny's favorite axe, and it was his trusty stage partner for nearly 20 years.

The Johnny Cash D35 is meant to be played as much as it's a collectors guitar. It truly plays and sounds as amazing as it looks. Features include an Engelman spruce top, three-piece Indian rosewood back and sides, ebony fingerboard with abalone star inlays and the interior label is signed by Johnny Cash's son, John Carter Cash, and C.F. Martin IV.
