Envisioned as a performance art persona with a musical and major motion picture tie-in "The Lamb" — Chris Gaines was intended to be the Ziggy Stardust to Garth Brooks’ David Bowie. Instead, the Chris Gaines project nearly killed Garth Brooks career and gave the world one of the most memorable and bizarre moments in music history.

If you weren’t alive in the 90s - Garth Brooks was a cultural phenomenon and one of the first real crossover stars for country music. A one- time shoe salesman turned country music mega-star, Garth Brooks would go on to sell more records than anyone in American history. To say that he was a star at his peak would be a massive understatement. He was effectively - the male Taylor Swift.

Now imagine if Taylor Swift announced she was recording six albums under a new persona and writing a murder mystery movie around her new identity. And then she retired, came back and acted like it never happened. That's essentially what happened here with Garth Brooks as Chris Gaines in 1999.

NOTE: If you haven’t seen the Chris Gaines VH1 Behind the Music special - you are missing out on one of the strangest pieces of video on the internet. I highly recommend checking it out after watching this video.
