The world's top retro singer, Lionel Richie, will receive the Gershwin Award for Popular Song, according to the American Congress Library. 

On March 9, 2022, in Washington, D.C., during the all-star awards ceremony, he will receive the honor. 

On May 17, a PBS station will air the concert.



Richie said in a statement, "I am extremely grateful to have earned the Gershwin Award for Popular Song. This is certainly the honor of a lifetime.



"I am honored to be joining all the prior artists, whose work I also enjoy and love."


Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, and Garth Brooks have all won this award in the past.



All Night Long, "Endless Love," "Lady," "Penny Lover," "Truly," and "Stuck on You" are just a few of Richie's well-known singles. 

Together with the late Michael Jackson, he co-wrote the enduring hit song "We Are the World

Richie was a founding member of the Commodores, a funk and soul band that ruled the 1970s, before embarking on his successful solo career.



With the help of hits like "Three Times a Lady," "Still," and "Easy," the group experienced remarkable success.



In 2016, the performer took home four Grammys, an Oscar, and the MusicCares Person of the Year honor. 

He received a Kennedy Center honor in 2017.
