Ken Jennings gasps in disbelief after insanely easy Garth Brooks Jeopardy! clue is met with total silence
JEOPARDY!'s latest contestants got soundly ripped apart on social media over a hard-to-watch music fail.
On Tuesday's episode, no one buzzed in on a clue looking for country megastar Garth Brooks, which included a photo of him to boot.
In Double Jeopardy!, Brandon Deutch - a law student from Long Beach, California - selected the $800 clue under "‘90s Singers."
The screen displayed a full-sized photo of Garth Brooks donning one of his ten-gallon hats.
Ken, 49, read alongside the photo: “This country superstar's 'Friends In Low Places' was named CMA Single of the Year in 1991.”
Neither Brandon, Emily White, a marketing manager from Wilmington, Delaware, nor Nick Cascone, an orthopedic physician assistant originally from Queens, New York, buzzed in.
All three players just stared blankly ahead in confusion until the timer ran out.
KEN LAMENTS: 'HOW SOON WE FORGET'
Ken was seemingly not expecting the clue to be a triple stumper - or question with no attempts.
When it was time for him to explain the correct response, he could be seen jumping back, exclaiming: "Whoa!"
He added: "How soon we forget. That's Chris Gaines' alter ego, Garth Brooks," explaining the correct response.
The contestants are in a Champions Wildcard tournament for brief winners from Season 37 or Season 38, making the miss even more shocking.
Also, Garth Brooks is the second best-selling music artist of all time after The Beatles, according to Business Insider, so the clue wasn't exactly a deep cut.
FANS REACT: 'I WAS STUNNED'
One fan wrote on Reddit: “I can't believe Garth Brooks was a triple stumper after the clue said 'Friends in low places.'
I barely listen to country, and I knew it."
Another person agreed: “I hope Garth has hurt feelings."
A third fan replied: “Lol, came here for that! I was stunned."
A fourth defended: "We've had plenty of examples of players not knowing even hugely popular songs and artists. If you don't listen to the radio or watch awards shows, it's not that hard to avoid."
"I think that was before their time."
A fifth wrote on X: "I know the people who go on jeopardy are generally very well read and clearly knowledgeable, but tonight not a single person could identify a picture of Garth Brooks lmao"
Another wrote: "@Jeopardy is embarrassing sometimes. How the hell do you not know who Garth Brooks is?
And a seventh person posted: "These people didn't know Garth Brooks (even with a picture)?!!!"
The episode wound up being a fight between the two male contestants; going into Final Jeopardy, Nick had $18,200, Brandon $12,200, and Emily $5600.
Final Jeopardy! under: "HISTORIC OBJECTS" read: "The inscription on this, made in 1753, concludes “unto all the inhabitants thereof.”
Nick and Emily were correct with "The Liberty Bell," while Brandon wrote: "Thank you," wagering small.
Nick added 6,201, winning and advancing to the special's semifinals with 24,401 and a zen bow looking thrilled.
