This is a look around the home where Johnny Cash lived as a boy in Dyess, Arkansas. Dyess sits around 50 minutes from Memphis so we took a drive up early in the morning. Dyess is a small community set up as part of Roosevelt's New Deal. The tour starts at the old Dyess Theatre which is now the visitor centre which shows a brief film of the Cash family returning to the home following the renovation. There's also a timeline of Johnny Cash's life, plus the original projector from the cinema on with Johnny's brother Tommy carved his name while employed as projectionist there. There is a also a gift shop housed in the visitor centre. Next door is the Dyess Town Hall which now serves as a museum showcasing the set up of the Dyess community and the Cash family's history within it. There are also several artefacts from Johnny Cash's life. Another interesting building is on the corner of Dyess Circle where a scene was filmed for the 'I Walk The Line' movie starring Joaquim Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as Johnny and June Carter. The scene filmed here was the accident that resulted in his brother Jack's death. The boyhood home itself is short drive down dirt roads for which you take the small tour bus. The home includes original artefacts including ornaments, Johnny Cash's mother's piano and even the linoleum flooring! You can't film in the house or the Town Hall so I've inserted some pictures to highlight these. Well worth a visit!!!
