The film was adapted from an original screenplay by Harold Bloom, who sent it to Kirk Douglas. Impressed by the story, Douglas not only opted to take on the lead role but also became a co-producer of the picture. Douglas convinced Johnny Cash to collaborate as co-stars. The Jicarilla tribe, known for its abundant oil resources, contributed to the financing. its leader, Chief Charlie, held a deep admiration for Johnny Cash.
