The night before his fateful ‘reunion’ with his brother Esav, the patriarch Yaakov (Jacob) sends his family and flocks safely across the Jabok stream, and is left alone on the other side. A ‘man’ wrestles with Jacob all night, unable to defeat him but finally wounding him. At the break of dawn, the two engage in a bizarre dialogue: the unidentified adversary asks Jacob to discharge him; Jacob refuses unless he blesses him…and the adversary informs Jacob that his name will henceforth be Israel. Who was that man anyway? Why did he attack Jacob, why did he request to be dismissed because ‘dawn had broken,’ and what is the meaning of their strange exchange?

The Torah portion of Vayetzei (Gen. 32 : 4 - 36 : 43) is read on Shabbat, Kislev 19, 5781 - December 5, 2020
