What the heck, let's listen to another couple classic American spruce/mahogany dreadnoughts and compare them.
Today we're listening to the current versions of Gibson J45 Standard; a short-scale, slope shouldered dreadnought and the Guild D40 Traditional; a long scale, square shouldered dreadnought. The J45 was introduced in 1952. Notable players of the J-45 include Buddy Holly, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, and Doc Watson. the D-40 was introduced in 1963. Richie Havens famously played his Guild D-40 at the Woodstock Festival.
Unfortunately I forgot to isolate fingerpicking for the D-40.
The J45 Standard has a Sitka Spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and a 24.75" scale. It sells with an LR Baggs Element pickup and a hardshell case for around $2750.
The D40 Traditional has a Sitka Spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and a 25.5" scale. It also utilizes scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing. It sells with a hardshell case for around $2400.
I won't lie to you; I'm a huge fan of the slope-shouldered short-scale dread so between the two I'd go J-45 all day, but there's something undeniably cool about that long scale length and the adirondack braces of the D40 as well.... As always, two stellar instruments here. Just interesting to hear them mic'd up together! Thanks for watching this video. I hope it will help you in your acoustic guitar journey somewhere along the way.
