Irish Wolf - A horror to the English, a balancing force to the Irish.

The new English settlers of the 1600's were horrified by the presence of the wolf in Ireland, as there were none in England. It was as though this was a symbol of the savagery of their new country. They would eventually succeed in their mission and with exception to captive wolves, there are none wild in Ireland today.
