With Indian Blue, three of New Orleans' foremost roots music artists find common ground between their respective genres. Monk Boudreaux, the longtime Big Chief of the Golden Eagles, is a keeper of the Mardi Gras Indian flame; for decades, he sang traditional chants in his band, The Wild Magnolias. Harmonica player, singer and accordionist Johnny Sansone specializes in blues, and on slide guitar is Papa Mali (Malcolm Helm Welbourne), front man for 7 Walkers, a 5-piece featuring former members of Grateful Dead, The Meters, and Willie Nelson's band. Together, they embody a unique New Orleans sound in the venerable, rural jazz hall.
Built in 1895, the small stage of the Dew Drop Jazz Hall, in the middle of the 400 block of Lamarque Street in Mandeville, once played host to Kid Ory, Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, Louis Armstrong and many early other Jazz artists. Now, the Friends of the Dew Drop presents spring and fall concert series with amazing regional musicians. Get there early to get a seat inside on the wooden pews, or bring a blanket or lawn chair and spread outside on the grounds to hear the music waft through the windows. Bring cash; tickets for the show are $10 and you'll want to purchase drinks and home-cooked meals from the First Free Mission Baptist Church next door.
