Johnny Cash recorded this song in 1956. It was his second hit and his first to hit number one on Billboard’s C&W chart. It was also a crossover hit. He supposedly wrote it as a promise to his wife, Vivian, whom he had married a little over a year earlier. The line and title “I Walk The Line” was suggested by Carl Perkins. Of course, he eventually fell in love with June Carter, who was on tour with him, a member of the Carter Family, royalty for country music. Vivian eventually wrote a book entitled “I Walked The Line” about her marriage to “The Man In Black”.
