Today we are going to be learning the song Hurt, written by Trent Reznor of NIN and covered beautifuly by Johnny Cash. This song is both a beginner song and an advanced song. The fingerpicking pattern may be tough for people to get, but we also show a beginner strum pattern so this song can be both an Intermediate song and a beginner song. The rests can also be difficult for people to get at first but you can count it out. Anyways, we cover it all, we have the tabs on the screen, we do the verse, chorus and outro, we have a play-a-long at the end, everything you need to master this song. The song was nominated for a grammy in 1996 for best Rock Song but lost to Alanis Morissette. The content of the song can be a little heavy, tackling both drug use and depression and the themes are carried by the slow rhythm and haunting melody. Johnny Cash changed some lyrics in his preforms, notably the refrence to the crown of thorns, which highlighted his devout Christianity. When Johnny Cash released the song the song Personal Jesus, another awesome song to play on Ukulele, was on the B-Side. Trent was worried about the idea of a cover sounding like a commercial gimmick, but was convinced when we saw the video and was actually moved to tears. Trent actually event said it was like, "losing a girlfriend," when we watched John's cover. Okay, that is sufficient background for this ukulele song now it is time for this ukulele lesson.
