Maiko was a service dog of the U.S. Army Rangers who gave his life for his two-legged comrades in November 2018.

That night, the Rangers attacked a building complex in southern Afghanistan and rallied in front of the enemy compound. Several insurgents had entrenched themselves on the other side, ready to ambush the soldiers in the darkness. But they had not reckoned with maiko: After the operators blew a hole in the wall, the service dog was the first to sprint through the breach, looking for the enemies who wanted to harm his "pack." As Maiko rushed through the building with no regard for his own life, the panicked insurgents opened fire, revealing their hidden position. The special operation forces following Maiko were now able to precisely attack the numerous enemies. Maiko thus contributed significantly to the mission's success, but unfortunately died under the hail of enemy bullets to which he had exposed himself.

All the rangers involved agree that Maiko saved their lives that day. He was the oldest and most experienced service dog of the battalion and will forever be remembered as a loyal comrade.
