You are listening to a new stereo remaster of the 1959 original recording. It climbed all the way to number 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1959 and stayed there for 40 weeks. In the same year another country singer, Guy Mitchell, recorded a less country-sounding version, giving him the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song would be recorded by country stars such as Buck Owens, Connie Francis, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

Ray Price, who once shared a house with the country icon Hank Williams during Williams' final years, was already a rising star by the time he recorded "Heartaches by the Number." Earlier, in 1956, Price had a massive hit with "Crazy Arms," which spent 20 weeks at number one on the country charts. This song also showcased Price’s innovation—the 4/4 shuffle beat, which he popularized. This rhythm set Price apart from the traditional 2/4 beat common in earlier country music, giving his songs a smoother, more danceable sound.

Throughout the years, the song had been used in many forms of media, most notably the 1980 re-recording by Guy Mitchell in the videogame Fallout: New Vegas in 2010.

Lyrics:
Heartache number one was when you left me
I never knew that I could hurt this way
And heartache number two was when you come back again
You came back and never meant to stay

Now I've got heartaches by the numbers, troubles by the score
Every day you love me less, each day I love you more
Yes, I've got heartaches by the numbers, a love that I can't win
But the day that I stop counting, that's the day my world will end

Heartache number three was when you called me
And said that you was coming back to stay
With hopeful heart I waited for your knock on the door
I waited but you must have lost your way

Now I've got heartaches by the numbers, troubles by the score
Every day you love me less, each day I love you more
Yes, I've got heartaches by the numbers, a love that I can't win
But the day that I stop counting, that's the day my world will end
