In the 17th century brigands and footpads preyed upon travellers around Nomansland common, the most famous of which was a highwayman known as the "Wicked Lady". It was claimed, after her death, to have been Lady Katherine Ferrers of Markyate. Ferrers Lane, which runs through the middle of the common, takes its name from her.
