FOR THE GOOD TIMES - A Kris Kristofferson Parody
Having the utmost respect for a songwriter doesn’t preclude swipin’ one of his brainchildren and convertin’ it in parody. In this instance, “cabin fever” led Yers Trooly to describe how “stay-in-place” social distancing (read self-imposed home quarantine) with the House Warden up here at the Hermitage is progressing. After watching “Outbreak” (Dustin Hoffman) and the more believable “Contagion” (Matt Damon) on the telly, we’ve become True Believers in the isolation imperative. (Governor Newsom just issued a statewide “stay at home” order effective tonight!)
So... rather than frustrate ourselves with the jigsaw puzzles from which the grandkids have lost at least 2 or 3 pieces each during past visits, “Me, Myself & I” have decided to pimp on good ol’ Kris Kristofferson’s 1968 masterpiece.
Don't look so coy, I know it's over
But life goes on and this ol' world will keep on turning
Let's just be glad we had some time to spend together
There's no need to watch the chessboard I’ll be burning
Wait a sec, you say, there’s nothing on the TV
You.’re tired of Canasta and you’re bored
When I suggest we try some checkers or parcheesi
You set up another game and I’m ignored
You say, One more time
And after you win, that we’ll play another
The evening’s still young, you grin, because you’re greedy
And I smile back because you’re coaxing me so sweetly
There'll be time enough for sadness when you beat me
My king is lying face down on the chessboard
Your queen put me in checkmate, I resign
Then I wimper that I’m slowly losing my grip on my mind
As you laugh because you know I’ll play one more time
For the good times
