I myself stumbled upon this film when I was a kid on some Saturday TV matinee, and it still holds up today as a good thriller. While the actual story may seem ludicrous, its emphasis is more focused on one man's struggle not only with his own choices but with a power that threatens to destroy himself, his best friend and a truth that would shake a nation to its core. The hypnotic part of it though is the mystery, allure & danger of the desert, complemented by the atmospheric Tangerine Dream score. Recommended if you can find it (currently on HBO Max since it was initially produced by HBO in the 80's).
