Jimmy Buffett, the singer and songwriter who immortalised carefree island living in the Caribbean through his hit "Margaritaville" and spawned a global brand of resorts, restaurants, and frozen drinks, has passed away. He was 76.

Late on Friday, a statement was posted to Buffett's official website and social media accounts announcing Buffett's death. "Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music, and dogs," the statement said. He sang his life's melody to his last day and will be sorely missed by many.

There was no mention of Buffett's death place or reason of death in the announcement. Buffett posted on social media that he had been hospitalised and had to cancel May gigs due to illness, but gave no other details. After its first release on February 14, 1977, the concept of "Margaritaville" took on a life of its own, providing an excuse for a carefree lifestyle of "growing older, but not up" and "wastin' away."

The song paints a relaxed picture of a slacker relaxing on his porch, as he watches sunbathing tourists and starts boiling prawns. The singer is inked up, probably hungover, and pining for a past flame. A salt shaker has gone missing from the kitchen.Spin magazine said in 2021 that the song "turns out to be a profound meditation on the often painful inertia of beach dwelling" despite its seemingly basic lyrical content about getting blotto and healing a shattered heart. The tourists are constantly coming and going, and it's impossible to tell them apart. No one needs to be around for waves to rise and crash. Everything significant that could have happened has already occurred, and you have no idea when that happened.

This single from the album "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for a total of 22 weeks, reaching as high as number eight during that time. It helped establish Key West, Florida as a unique musical style and popular tourist destination, and in 2016 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for its cultural and historical significance.According to an interview Buffett gave to the Arizona Republic in 2021, "there was no such place as Margaritaville." As the author puts it, "it was a made-up place in my mind, basically made up about my experiences in Key West and having to leave Key West and go on the road to work, and then come back, and spend time by the beach."

Buffett's purported yearning for the laid-back island lifestyle became a multimillion dollar brand thanks to the song's widespread appeal. In 2016, his $550 million in wealth put him at No. 13 on Forbes' list of America's Richest Celebrities.

Buffett's discography, which includes songs about beachside snack bars like "Fins," "Come Monday," and "Cheeseburgers in Paradise," has received mostly negative reviews from music reviewers. But his legions of admirers, known as "Parrotheads," routinely showed up for his concerts decked out in loud Hawaiian shirts, leis around their necks, and plastic parrots, cheeseburgers, sharks, and flamingos perched on their heads.

"It's pure escapism, is all it is," he told the Republic. I'm certainly not the first person to do this, and I doubt I'll be the last. However, I believe that having a good time is essential to the human experience. What you do for a living, or whatever else stresses you out, must be left behind. So far, my efforts to infuse work with some measure of enjoyment have been successful.

His unique blend of Caribbean instruments and tones, such steel drums, were added to his repertoire of country, pop, folk, and rock popular in the Gulf Coast. An amalgamation of pedal steel guitar, trombones, and steel pans. Lyrics about fish tacos and sunsets sometimes overshadowed Buffett's great ear for hooks and light rhythms.

Buffett's upcoming album, "Life on the Flip Side," received lukewarm praise in Rolling Stone's review. It's been said that he's 'charting his surfy, sandy patch of pop music heaven with the cool, welcoming warmth of a multi-millionaire you wouldn't mind enjoying a tropically-themed 3 p.m. IPA with, especially if his gold card was on the bar when the last round came'.
