Help Me Make It Through The Night – Live Comp. #97
Elvis had recorded the song at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville on 17 May 1971, and the master was a splice of takes 11 and 16. Spliced takes was something that Elvis disliked preferring his masters to be complete takes, although it must be pointed out that the splice is only the ending. The recording date, three months after Elvis had first performed the song live, makes this only one of three songs which Elvis performed live before recording it in the studio in the seventies, with the others being 'Funny How Time Slips Away' and 'My Boy'.
There are currently just over fifty known live renditions by Elvis between 1971 and 1976, ten of which are contained in this compilation.
00:00 Version One – 19 February 1971, Midnight Show – Las Vegas
This is the earliest known live rendition and one of the longest, it also contains an instrumental part. It would be almost exactly three months before Elvis would record the song in the studio.
03:25 Version Two – 20 August 1971, Midnight Show – Las Vegas
05:23 Version Three – 21 February 1972, Midnight Show – Las Vegas
08:27 Version Four – 9 April 1972, Afternoon Show – Las Vegas
This was the only rendition from this tour, and the final one of the year, and that in itself is a pity as MGM would film four shows during this tour including the evening show on this date at this venue!
10:18 Version Five – 27 June 1973 – Portland
12:51 Version Six – 20 August 1973, Midnight Show – Las Vegas
14:43 Version Seven – 2 July 1974 – Salt Lake City
The only known rendition from this year. Poor audio best listened to through headphones!
17:20 Version Eight – 9 June 1975 – Jackson
The only rendition from this excellent tour.
19:15 Version Nine – 13 December 1975, Midnight Show – Las Vegas
21:54 Version Ten – 6 December 1976, 9pm Show – Las Vegas
The final live rendition, 1976 NOT 1975 as the video caption states!!
As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
