This is apparently the resting place of infamous highwayman, horse thief, and murderer Richard "Dick" Turpin - otherwise known as John Palmer. He was arrested for shooting his landlord's cockerel but gave them his pseudonym. Turpin's true identity was thought to have been revealed by a letter he wrote to his brother from his prison cell (which had been returned due to the postage not being paid) when someone recognised his writing. On 22 March 1739, Turpin was found guilty and sentenced to death; he was hanged at Knavesmire (York) on 7th April 1739.
