In life, Dick Turpin abandoned an honest life as a butcher's apprentice and chose a life of crime. For several years, he robbed and rampaged his way through the English countryside. In life, people raised cash for a bounty on his head and turned out to watch him do the gallows jig. Yet, in death, he transformed into a romantic hero who robbed the rich and gave to the poor.
