Dick Turpin lived in the 17th century and was similar to Robin Hood well kind of one difference being he was ruthless and robbed both the rich and the poor and was well-known for it.
He was a highwayman, robber and outlaw or in simple terms a Gangster or what many call a Top G.
He was apprehended for robbing but told the jailer he was called John.
When he sent a letter to a relative for help in getting out of jail a postman recognised his writing and informed that the man who sent the letter was not John Palmer, as he claimed, but rather Dick Turpin, which the postman had apparently taught to write when he was younger.
So they recognised they had the famous outlaw known as Dick Turpin and he was executed.
Most of what we know is part myth and part truth, so we never know the full story.
