He was born as J. R. Cash in Kingsland, Arkansas. When he enlisted in the US Air Force he was not permitted to use initials as first name so he changed it to John R. Cash. He signed his first record deal in 1955 as 'Johnny Cash' and released his first singles which were met with success on the country hitparade. He continued recording and releasing songs that could be considered Rock and Roll, Blues, Rockabilly, Folk and Gospel. He won 18 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame and 4 more different Hall of Fames during his lifetime. Cash died in 2003 on complication from diabetes and a broken heart after his longtime wife June passed away. With over 90 million records sold worldwide he is one of the all-time best selling artist.
