One could think after my entry in the GemsOnVHS Gems In The Rough contest last year it wouldn't be such a barrier for me to participate this year as well. But writing and recording an own song, live, is such a different thing for me. "Highwayman of Hopes" is a piece I wrote a few months back. For years now, I don't really know where to go and I am constantly struggling finding some purpose in my life. I have an impostor syndrome and am destroying myself way too often when it comes to things I care about. It gets better from time to time, but way slower than I would like. This song was a way of coping with these demons.

[Verse 1]
The highwayman of hopes is standing by
Waiting to assault you down the road
He’s just as scary as he was last time
When he harvested the dreams you once have sowed
[Verse 2]
You maintained them and slowly watched them grow
Hoping everyday it’s worth the wait
And that it ain‘t another in a row
That ends up being bound to suffocate
[Chorus]
The barrels of his colts, they shine so bright
On that balmy evening in fall
When he robs you of your sapling oh so young
Without using them at all
Oh, not at all
[Verse 3]
The crows of doubt returned everyday
Cawing scournful, pecking bloody holes
And the strength wasted for chasing them away
Slowly sucked the joy out of your soul
But finally, they’re leaving for the night
Returning to the highwayman of hopes
[Chorus]
The barrels of his colts, they shine so bright
On that balmy evening in fall
When he robs you of your sapling oh so young
Without using them at all
Oh, not at all
[Verse 4]
The highwayman of hopes is standing by
Angrier than usual, you can tell
But just as scary as he’s all the time
Looking like a man you know too well
Oh, too well
