While on the "Winter Dance Party" tour across the Midwest, the American rock and roll musician Buddy Holly and several other musicians endured the long journeys between venues on board unheated tour buses. Holly decided to charter a 1947 single-engined, V-tailed Bonanza to fly from Clear Lake, Iowa to Fargo, North Dakota and avoid the 365 mile bus ride. J P Richardson, suffering from flu, swapped places with Waylon Jennings, taking his seat on the plane, while Tommy Allsup lost his seat to Richie Valens on a coin toss. When Holly learned that Jennings was not going to fly, he said in jest: "Well, I hope your damned bus freezes up." "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes" Jennings responded which haunted him for the rest of his life. Shortly after midnight on February 3, 1959, the pilot lost control of the plane and crashed into a cornfield. The right wing tip struck the ground first causing the plane to cartwheel across the frozen terrain, breaking into pieces.
