The song was influenced by the real-life hanged highwayman Jonathan Wild. Webb first recorded this song in May 1977 followed by Glen Campbell in 1979
In 1985 , the song became the inspiration for the naming of the super group "The Highwayman" featuring Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. This version of the song went to #1 on the country charts Jimmy Webb earned a Grammy Award for the Best Country Song in 1986
