Queen Bey’s new album brings a wave of representation and cultural fusion to western fashion. One local influencer calls it a reclamation of Black country identity.
Beyoncé’s latest album, Cowboy Carter, ignites a country era that breaks stereotypes, redefining Western culture’s appearance, feel, and sound.
Her music's impact is already noticeable before the Calgary Stampede, generating excitement and attracting a more diverse crowd.
Maria José, a local fan, reconnected with the Calgary Stampede after hearing Beyoncé’s 2024 album and seeing her embrace western fashion. She’s prepared her iconic looks for the 10-day festival, showcasing outfits from various local businesses.
“What’s special about Cowboy Carter is that Beyoncé is changing the perception of Western style,” José said.
José, who is biracial with Angolan and Belarusian heritage, deeply resonated with the album.
“I saw myself represented in Western culture, which historically I haven’t,” she said. “Representation is a powerful tool to make people feel welcome.”
José’s experience isn’t unique.
Connie Polancec, manager of the local store Cody & Sioux, said, “Groups of girls come in here, stand and start doing Beyoncé moves and twirling their hats. It’s great fun.”
Local shops notice that pop culture icons like Beyoncé can expand a consumer base that has historically excluded certain groups.
Dana Patraschuk, owner of Girl + Friends Collective, noted this shift.
“We have the classic country artists like Garth Brooks and Willie Nelson, but not everyone relates to them. So when stars like Beyoncé, Jelly Roll, Post Malone get involved, people think, ‘Hey! If they can do it, I can too!’”
According to the Instagram account “Data, But Make It Fashion,” the popularity of Western attire, including boots, Levi jeans, denim-on-denim, and rhinestone cowboy hats, has surged since the release of Cowboy Carter.
For many, representation in pop culture boosts inclusivity and cultural unity at the Calgary Stampede.
“As an immigrant to Calgary, it’s exciting to feel part of the community,” José shared.
