Written and recorded in 1969 by Kris Kristofferson, this country ballad was released in 1970. After Kristofferson's release, the ballad was also covered by Sammi Smith that same year. It has been covered since by many other artists from Tammy Wynette and Johnny Carson to Joan Baez and Elvis Presley. Smith's recording of the song remains the best known version in the US. The song topped the Country Singles chart and was also a crossover hit, reaching No. 8 on the US Pop Singles chart. In 1998, the 1970 release of Smith's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. I hope you enjoy my rendition for accordion.
