Located in the county of Berkshire, around 6 miles west of the M25 motorway which roughly encircles London, is the town of Ascot.

The name Ascot is derived from Anglo-Saxon - East-Cote, meaning the Eastern Cottage, probably in reference to being east of the royal estate at Easthampstead, a former village and now a suburb of Bracknell, the neighbouring town to the west.

For most of its history, Ascot consisted largely of dangerous heathland frequented by highwaymen. In the early 18th century Queen Anne discovered this open heathland whilst hunting in Windsor Forest which she thought an ideal place, around five miles away from Windsor Castle, for "horses to gallop at full stretch".

Thus, Ascot Racecourse was founded in 1711. The first race took place on the 11th of August that year, named 'Her Majesty's Plate', worth 100 guineas. Then in 1768 the racecourse would go on to host the first of what was to become one of the most famous events in all of horse racing - Royal Ascot.

Taking place each June during the flat season (i.e. no fences or hurdles), Royal Ascot is a five-day horse racing festival. Each of the five days begins with the Queen and other members of the royal family arriving via horse-drawn carriage - a tradition started in 1825 by George IV. The festival upholds the strictest of dress codes, including top hats for the men!

The most successful jockey at Royal Ascot is Frankie Dettori with a career total of 73 wins over the event at the time of writing. The most successful horse in terms of Gold Cup wins is Yeats.
