"American Man" was written the night after Johnny Cash passed on. I was living and recording in Nashville at the time. A year later his official biography was released with the same title "American Man". That's when I knew there was a destiny for this song.
Having met Johnny and June through my work a few years before, I was -like so many- stunned and later that night after the tears dried, wrote this anthem for a great American's passing. Being a diminutive woman, meeting Cash was like shaking Abraham Lincoln's hand. He cast a tall imposing and magnetic presence in the backstage area. June sat in back watching him with gentle eyes as he greeted friends. I never forgot that conversation and the lyrics to "American Man" thundered through me the night of his home going. I knew the words and music were God's grace and a consolation to me. Later that week, attending Cash's memorial at the Ryman Auditorium, I was able to share about the song with a few friends and am finally publishing it as a tribute to President elect Trump and his wife and family who have been much in our prayers. Be strong, our American Man.
