(20 Jun 2021) A PROFILE OF KRIS KRISTOFFERSON AHEAD OF HIS 85TH BIRTHDAY ON TUESDAY
Country music superstar and Hollywood actor Kris Kristofferson turns 85 years old, Tuesday (22 JUNE 2021).
Kristofferson, an Oxford scholar from Texas, brought introspective and poetic lyrics to country music with songs like "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" and "Me and Bobby McGee" and was a member of the supergroup The Highwaymen, with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.
He has starred in 70 films and earned a Golden Globe for his performance in "A Star is Born," opposite Barbra Streisand. He also starred with Ellen Burstyn in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (for which Burstyn won an Academy Award), but also had a fondness for shoot-out Westerns and cowboy dramas.
In 1973, he married fellow songwriter Rita Coolidge and together they had a successful duet career that earned them two Grammy awards. They divorced in 1980.
He was inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame and was awarded the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriter Hall of Fame. He also received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy.
Earlier this year, the star announced that he retired in 2020 after five decades, with his son, John, stepping in to oversee his father's business, including special projects and his record label KK Records. His estate will be managed by Morris Higham Management, which also manages clients including Kenny Chesney, Barbara and Louise Mandrell and the Roger Miller estate.
Kristofferson has five children with wife Lisa Meyers, and three from his two previous marriages.
