My rendition of this song that was originally recorded by Shel Silverstein on December 14, 1968, and released by him in May 1969. Johnny Cash's version was recorded live in concert on February 24, 1969 at California's San Quentin State Prison. It was released as a single on June 4, 1969 on the Columbia label, produced by Bob Johnston, with B-side "San Quentin". The single entered the Billboard Hot 100 top 40 on August 2, 1969, becoming Cash's 12th top 40 pop hit, and charted for 11 weeks, peaking at number 2 for 3 weeks. It entered the Billboard Hot Country Singles top 40 a week later, becoming Cash's 60th top 40 Country hit, and charted for 12 weeks, peaking at number 1 for 5 weeks between August 23 and September 27, 1969, becoming his 10th number 1 Country hit. It also reached number 1 on RPM Canada Country Tracks, RPM Canada Adult Contemporary, and Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks, number 2 on Go-Set in Australia and US Cash Box Top 100, number 3 on RPM Canada Top Singles and IRMA in Ireland, number 4 on OCC UK Singles, and number 13 on Single Top 100 in the Netherlands and in South Africa. On the Year-end charts for 1969, it ranked number 34 on US Cash Box, number 36 on US Billboard Hot 100, number 40 on Billboard US Adult Contemporary, and number 49 in Canada. The single was certified Gold in the US by the RIAA for sales of over a million copies and Silver in the UK by BPI for over 200,000 copies sold. The song appeared as track 3 on side 2 of Cash's June 16, 1969 Columbia album, Johnny Cash at San Quentin. Written by Shel Silverstein.
